VENTURA COUNTY FAIR | Through Aug. 13. “A Country Fair with Ocean Air” is back once again with all the fun and excitement visitors have enjoyed, summer after summer. Carnival rides, food booths, exhibits, agricultural shows and so much more! This year’s theme is “The Time of Your Life!” Wristband days: Aug. 3, 7, 8 and 9 ($40 wristbands; good until 7 p.m. on day of purchase). Admission $10-15; $48 for season passes. TIME MACHINE: THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE | 10 a.m.-12 p.m. via Zoom. Launched on Christmas morning 2021, and after a 1-million-mile journey and a six-month commissioning process, the Webb Telescope began full operations in the Summer of 2022. And already the telescope has provided amazing insights and upended the accepted models of the early universe. NIGHT IN OAXACA | 5-8 p.m. The Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) will hold its 12th annual Night in Oaxaca. Throughout the years, Night in Oaxaca has become the largest and most sought-after fundraiser that helps MICOP continue its mission of supporting, organizing, and empowering the indigenous migrant community on California’s Central Coast. FIND YOUR VOICE SUMMER READING PROGRAM | Through Aug. 4. The Ventura County Library encourages the love of reading with a range of free activities for children, teens and adults throughout the summer. Summer is a wonderful time to explore a variety of topics or learn about a new hobby with books available from VCL. This initiative helps keep youth and families engaged in a range of critical thinking and skill building, and fun throughout the summer months to avoid the summer slide. INTERN WITH VENTURA WILD | Through Aug. 19. Ventura Wild’s internship program is a professional development opportunity for those interested in working with children in an education environment that promotes awareness, understanding and profound respect for nature. Interns are scheduled to assist one of our Summer Camps (one week, 5-7 hours/day) with the opportunity to secure additional camps. We ask for interns to be present for the whole week to best establish a rapport with the group and build a consistent and meaningful group dynamic. VC 150 MEMORIES WEBSITE | Designed to be a community-driven project, “VC 150 Memories” aims to celebrate and preserve the cherished memories of residents in Ventura County. The website provides an opportunity for residents from across the county to collectively contribute photos of special moments and experiences, both past and present, that have shaped their lives in Ventura County. Community members are invited to submit their favorite images, which will be featured in a public photo gallery on the website. Images submitted will be used to create a visual representation of the county’s rich history and diverse communities. In partnership with the Museum of Ventura County, photos that are submitted will be incorporated into public event exhibits and later archived by the museum. OJAI PLAYWRIGHTS CONFERENCE NEW WORKS FESTIVAL | Through Aug. 6. Ojai Playwrights Conference (OPC), under the leadership of new Producing Artistic Director Jeremy B. Cohen, has announced the selection of playwrights for its 26th Annual New Works Festival. Playwrights and their plays to be presented in the Festival include: Ngozi Anyanwu, My...Name is Beatrice; Benjamin Benne, and thou shalt be healed; Mathilde Dratwa, Dirty Laundry; Julia Izumi, Akira Kurosawa Explains His Movies and Yogurt (with Live & Active Cultures!); and Anne Washburn, The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire. In addition to the five new plays, the festival will include a special event for artists in Ojai and the OPC community (including participants in the Youth Workshop and Intern programs) to share their work with the public, and an evening of conversation with the 2023 Festival playwrights, led by Cohen.
